Obesity: A Growing Concern

Obesity has been recognised as a global epidemic; and in Singapore, around 1 in 10 adults is classified as obese, with the trend being on the rise. What may seem like a few extra kilos can actually have long-term consequences on your health and quality of life.

Obesity in Singapore

It has been estimated that the prevalence of obesity in Singapore is approximately 11% and is still expected to increase. Furthermore, obesity has been found to be the largest contributor to the nation’s disease burden of diabetes mellitus, standing at around 73%. This underscores the importance and urgency of tackling this problem effectively.

What is Obesity?

Obesity is a medical condition characterised by an excessive accumulation of body fat. It is commonly measured using the Body Mass Index (BMI), which calculates a person's weight in relation to their height. A BMI of 25-29.9 is considered overweight, while a BMI of 30 or above indicates obesity.

However, BMI doesn’t tell the whole story – other factors like body fat distribution and muscle mass also play important roles in determining your health risk.

What Causes Obesity?

The causes of obesity are multifaceted, involving a mix of environmental, genetic, medical and behavioural factors. In many cases, our increasingly sedentary lifestyles – driven by long working hours, high-calorie diets, and limited physical activity – are major contributors to weight gain.
