Since we started the Obesity and Metabolic Unit at the LIFE Centre (in Singapore General Hospital), I've seen firsthand the challenges and frustrations many of my patients face on their journey to a healthier weight. The landscape of weight loss treatments is constantly evolving, with dramatic changes over the past decade.
A bold new player has recently entered the scene in Singapore, creating quite a stir: Mounjaro. Dubbed the "King Kong" of weight loss medications, Mounjaro (active ingredient: tirzepatide) has been making headlines, and for good reason.
So, what exactly is Mounjaro, and what makes it so powerful?
Mounjaro is the newest GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) treatment to be officially launched in Singapore. Unlike its predecessors, such as Saxenda, Ozempic and Wegovy, Mounjaro has a unique and powerful double-action mechanism. Its active ingredient, tirzepatide, is a synthetic copy of a gut hormone called GIP (Gastric Inhibitory Peptide) with a piece of GLP-1 attached to it. This dual-action approach is what sets it apart.
By targeting both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, Mounjaro goes beyond the single-action mechanism of other GLP-1 medications. It helps regulate blood sugar, slows down the emptying of the stomach, and reduces appetite. Furthermore, Mounjaro prevents the accumulation of fat and stimulates the breakdown of existing fat cells. All these effects contribute to remarkable weight loss results. Clinical trials have shown that the majority of patients on Mounjaro can achieve more than 20% weight loss, a level previously seen only with bariatric surgery. This is why it has earned its reputation as the "King Kong" of weight loss medications.
Mounjaro is administered as a once-weekly injection. The injection is simple and can be done at home. While it's a powerful tool, it's crucial to understand that it's not a magic bullet. It works best when combined with a healthy diet and regular physical activity.
Like all medications, Mounjaro comes with potential side effects. The common side effects are similar to other GLP-1 drugs and include nausea, bloating, abdominal cramps, and other gastrointestinal disturbances. These are often most pronounced when starting the medication and tend to lessen over time.
Rarer but more serious side effects can include inflammation of the gallbladder and pancreas. As with any gut hormone therapy, these side effects are often dose-related. This is why it is critically important to start on the lowest dose, 2.5mg, and work with your doctor to gradually increase it as needed. Your doctor will monitor your progress and help you manage any side effects to ensure your safety and success.
Mounjaro represents a significant leap forward in the medical treatment of weight loss. Its dual-action mechanism offers a new level of effectiveness, giving hope to many who have struggled with their weight for years. However, it's a powerful medication that requires careful supervision from a healthcare professional. If you are considering Mounjaro or any other weight loss medication, please consult with your doctor to determine if it's the right option for you and to create a personalized treatment plan that is both safe and effective.
