Dr Shanker Pasupathy

Dr. Shanker is the medical director of the Digestive Centre at Mount Elizabeth Hospital. He is a key opinion leader and invited speaker for gastro-esophageal reflux, hernia, weight loss and metabolic disease intervention. He has given numerous press, television and radio interviews and is actively involved in the training of nurses, GPs and specialist doctors both locally and in the region for various treatments including anti-obesity medications, Linx, fundoplication, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass and endoscopic gastroplasty. Dr Shanker received the Dean’s Award for teaching excellence from NUS Medicine in 2012.

He was an ASEAN Scholar at Raffles Institution and obtained his medical degree from the National University of Singapore in 1995. He completed higher training in gastro-intestinal endoscopy, laparoscopy and robotics in the UK, France and Germany. Prior to starting private practice, Dr Shanker was the director of the LIFE Centre and senior consultant and chief of the metabolic-bariatric surgery service at the Department of Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery, Singapore General Hospital. He is a past president of the Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia Singapore (ELSAS) and the Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society of Singapore (OMSSS). He is a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and Visiting Professor at the Asian Institute of Telesurgery (AITS), Taiwan.

Education & Professional Memberships

Dr Shanker completed his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at the National University of Singapore in 1995. He then underwent further training in general, gastrointestinal and vascular surgery in Singapore, Germany, the UK and France.

During his year-long fellowship at the Research Institute Against Digestive Cancer (IRCAD) and Louis Pasteur University in France (2007), he also received training in advanced keyhole and robotic surgery at the University of Strasbourg.

Dr Shanker is the president of the Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society of Singapore (OMSSS), a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and an international faculty member at the Asian Institute of Telesurgery (AITS) in Taiwan. He was the previous president of the Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia (Singapore Chapter).
